E-Commerce Sales Exceed $1 Billion Over Thanksgiving

E-Commerce sales on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday saw a significant jump from a year ago while total retail sales from the two days – e-commerce and brick-and-mortar combined – were down from 2013. According to internet technology analyst comScore, e-commerce sales totaled $1.009 billion – which exceeded the $1 billion plateau for the first time ever – on Thanksgiving Day alone, up from $766 from last year. It should be noted that comScore’s findings included e-commerce spending via personal computers only and not mobile phones or tablets, which would make that figure significantly higher.

E-Commerce Sales Up Everywhere

Along with comScore, several retail analysts were hard at work over the weekend. Adobe Systems, Inc., the found that e-commerce sales increased 25 percent on Thanksgiving Day and 24 percent on Black Friday. More so, Adobe announced that mobile devices made up 28 percent of all e-commerce sales during the two days.

ChannelAdvisor said that e-tailers selling on the Amazon platform reported that e-commerce sales on Saturday increased 45.9 percent over last year, the result of early Cyber Monday deals and offers.

What Does it Mean for E-Commerce Sales?

The quick and easy answer is that e-commerce sales continue to grow. But when examined further, consumers are increasingly content to shop from their PCs and mobile devices rather than toil in the traffic and checkout lines of the giant retailers on Black Friday. The record numbers also present plenty of optimism for Cyber Monday, when consumers are encouraged to shop online and are presented with a wealth of deals from e-commerce merchants.

Additionally, although consumers are well aware of cyber threats and hackers, the numbers show that there is a significant degree of confidence in e-commerce spending.
