CRM, Alternative Lending and Medical Payments: Takeaways from the WSAA Conference Day 1

The 12th Annual Western States Acquirers Association (WSAA) conference opened Wednesday morning to a full day of seminars followed by meetings at the M Resort just outside Las Vegas. The show marked a return for Instabill, which last attended the WSAA Conference in 2012. It was also the 10th trade show appearance of the calendar year, a practice of Instabill that continually pays dividends.

EMV: It’s a Mess…for Now

The first meeting of the WSAA Conference was a roundtable of issues hosted by the Electronic Transaction Association (ETA), and it wasn’t long before the topic of the day — really, the year—revealed itself: The all-around frustration that is EMV. As it dominated the conversation, all parties agreed the key was that it is going to take consistent communication between the PSPs, the merchant and the terminal provider.

Plenty to Ponder at WSAA

There were three speakers at the WSAA Conference that particularly stood out and offered a glimpse of emerging trends within the payments industry. Early Wednesday afternoon, Garina Shah of Direct Connect, LLC offered her expertise on examining your customer relationship management. Ms. Shah presented 10 reasons ISOs, agents and PSPs need a CRM to thrive (that will be a blog in itself next week).

Scott Griest, the CEO of Rapid Capital, gave an energetic presentation on alternative lending: ISOs, agents and PSPs adding business lending as a service to their menu of offerings. It was a presentation that drew the attention of the 100-plus in attendance.

Finally, Mary Winingham of Mirror Consulting spoke of the benefits and challenges of getting into medical payments — a potentially profitable jump, but a field difficult to crack.

A Busy Stand is a Happy Stand

While the WSAA Conference exhibit hall hours were limited to 5:30-7:30, Instabill CEO Jason Field and Senior Copywriter Chris O’Donnell made the most of it. With several scheduled meetings on the day, they entertained more than 20 walk-up visitors inquiring about Instabill merchant services, with plenty more meetings on Thursday.
