Don’t get us wrong: We do have setup fees ($199 for domestic merchant accounts and $499 for offshore) and so does the acquiring bank with which we match your business, but you won’t pay a cent until we’ve got a solution for you. Our company is known for finding payment processing solutions for high risk, difficult to place merchants, but on some occasions we may not have options.
Our school of thought: We shouldn’t be paid until we find the merchant a payment processing solution.
Refunds and Chargebacks
Let’s say we did have a merchant account application fee. A prospective high risk merchant applies for a merchant account with Instabill and pays said fee. It’s one of those rare occasions we are unable to locate a payment processing solution, yet, he’s already paid the non-refundable fee.
Now the merchant’s not happy, and he wants the fee returned to him. Thus, he files a chargeback with his card issuer, and why shouldn’t he? It is simply not worth the time to collect the fee, fight the chargeback and potentially burn a bridge.
We preach about chargeback mitigation ad nauseum – chargebacks are the root of all evil in e-commerce. For this very reason, imposing a merchant account application fee wouldn’t make sense.
